May Day is traditionally an opportunity for workers to express their grievances. Some people believe 'hat it IS all began in Australia in 1856 with a series of annual strikes. A more likely origin took place thirty years later in 1886 when an American federation of labor called for nationwide strikes and demonstrations for an eight-hour day. On May 1st the police opened fire on a crowd of demonstrations in the city of Milwaukee. Nine people were killed. Two days later, police killed SIX demonstrators at a factory in Chicago, though eight of their own men were subsequently killed in the protest which followed.
In July 1889, as part of centenary celebrations of the French Revolution, an international labor congress meeting in Paris called for an internal day of demonstrations in support of the eight-hour day on .May 1st 1890. And on that date the world celebrated its first global labor holiday.
